Origins and Early Innovations

The roots of offset printing can be traced back to the late 19th century. It emerged as an evolution of the lithographic printing process, which involved the transfer of ink from a flat stone or metal plate to paper. Ira Washington Rubel is often credited with the invention of offset printing in 1904. While working at his father’s printing shop, Rubel accidentally discovered that the image on the printing plate could be transferred onto a rubber roller before reaching the paper, creating a more efficient and consistent printing process.
